Vitamin C

Indication

Vitamin C Tablet is used in the treatment and prevention of vitamin C deficiency such as scurvy, gum bleeding, anemia, cartilage and bone lesions and slow healing of wounds.

Dosage and Administration

1 caplet daily.

Or as recommended by Healthcare Professionals. Maximum dose: 1000 mg per day.

Swallow the whole tablet with water.

Description

Vitamin C is an essential water soluble vitamin. Chemically, it is (5R)-5-[(1S)-1,2-Dihydroxyethyl] -3,4-dihydroxyfuran-2-(5H)-one. Its molecular formula is C6H8O6 and its molecular weight is 176.1.

Clinical Pharmacology

Ascorbic acid, vitamin C, is essential for collagen synthesis and tissue repair; involved in some oxidation-reduction reactions as well as other metabolic pathways such as synthesis of carnitine, steroids and catecholamines; and conversion of folic acid to folinic acid.

Pharmacokinetics

Vitamin C is readily absorbed from GI tract and widely distributed in body tissues. Plasma concentrations rise as the dose ingested as increased until a plateau is reached with the doses of about 90 to 150 mg daily. Contraindication

Patients who have hypersensitivity to medicaments contained in the drug.

Precaution

Large dose may result in hyperoxaluria and formation of renal calcium oxalate caliculi and therefore, vitamin C should be given with caution in patient with hyperoxaluria. Diabetes and patient prone to recurrent renal caliculi (e.g. dialysis patients) should not take excessive doses for long period ...

Adverse Effect

Large doses can lead to diarrhoea and other GI disturbances.

Drug Interaction

Iron: Vitamin C enhances iron absorption from GI tract. Oral Contraceptives: Concomitant use may increase contraceptive effect. Change in dose of vitamin C when taken with oral contraceptives may reduce contraceptive effect.

Fluphenazine and other phenothiazines: Combination may decrease fluphenazine concentration.

Warfarin: Vitamin C may reduce the anticoagulant effect of warfarin.

Storage

Store below 30°C in cool and dry place. Protect from light and moisture.
