Thiamine

Indication

Prevention and treatment of Vitamin 8 deficiency states, Beri-Beri (dry or wet) or Wernicke's encephalopathy.

Dosage and Administration

Mild deficiency: 25 - 100 mg daily.

Severe deficiency: 200 - 300 mg daily in divided doses or to be determined by the physician according to the needs of the patient.

Composition

Each tablet contains:

Thiamine Hydrochloride B.P ... 50 mg.

Description

Chemically, Thiamine Hydrochloride is 3-[(4-Amino-2- methyl pyrimidin -5-yl)methyl]-5-(2-hydroxyethyl)-4-methylth­ iazolium chloride hydrochloride. Molecular formula of it is C12H18Cl2 N.QS and its molecular weight is 337.3.

Pharmacokinetics

Vitamin B 1 is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and widely distributed to most body tissues. It is not stored in the body and amounts in excess of the body's requirements are excreted in urine as unchanged thiamine or as its metabolite, pyrimidine.

Contraindication

Hypersensitivity to Thiamine Hydrochloride or any components of the medication.

Precaution

Thiamine may occasionally cause anaphylactic shock in breast feeding. Severely thiamine-deficient mothers should avoid breastfeeding as toxic methylglyoxal in milk.

Adverse Effects

This vitamin usually has no side effects. Contact your doctor or pharmacist promptly if any of the following unusual effects occur: a very rare serious allergic reaction like rash, itching or swelling (especially of face, tongue and throat), severe dizziness and trouble breathing.

Drug Interaction

Ethanol inhibits absorption of thiamine.

Storage

Store below 30°C in cool, dry place. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach and sight of children.
