Sodium Bicarbonate

Indication

Sodium bicarbonate neutralizes acid secretion in gastrointestinal tract. It is used to relieve the symptoms in ulcer dyspepsia and non-erosive gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Dosage and Administration

2 - 6 tablets to be taken as required. Tablets should be taken with a glass of water. It should be given when symptoms are occurred or expected usually between meals and at bedtime or as directed by the physician.

Composition

Each tablet contains:

Sodium Bicarbonate B.P ... 300 mg.

Description

Sodium Bicarbonate has the molecular formula of NaHCO3, and molecular weight is 84.

Clinical Pharmacology

Sodium Bicarbonate is a systemic antacid. It is water soluble and is readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. It acts as a systemic alkali as well as having a local effect in the stomach. After administration, sodium bicarbonate dissociates to provide bicarbonate ion which neutralizes hydro...

Pharmacokinetics

Sodium bicarbonate is well absorbed after oral administration as sodium ion and bicarbonate. It occurs naturally and is confined to the systemic circulation. It is filtered and reabsorbed by the kidneys, less than 1% of filtered bicarbonate is excreted.

Contraindication

Contraindicated in patient with alkalosis, hypernatremia, severe pulmonary edema, hypocalcaemia and unknown abdominal pain.

Precaution

Sodium bicarbonate should be used with caution in patients with congestive heart failure, edema, cirrhosis, renal failure and to patients receiving corticosteroids. In patients who take large volumes of sodium bicarbonate, systemic alkalosis may occur and result in hypercalcaemia with nephrocalcinos...

Adverse Effects

Adverse effects of sodium bicarbonate include hypernatremia, hypocalcaemia, hypokalaemia, intracranial acidosis, metabolic alkalosis, milk-alkali syndrome, pulmonary edema, flatulence, gastric distension, belching, cerebral haemorrhage, congestive heart failure and tetany.

Drug Interaction

Increased effect: Sodium bicarbonate increased the actions of amphetamines, ephedrine, pseudoephedrine, quinidine and quinine due to urinary alkalinization.

Decreased effect: Sodium bicarbonate decreased the actions of lithium, chlorpropamide and salicylates due to urinary alkalinization.

Storage

Store below 30°C in cool and dry place. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach and sight of children.
