Pharmacokinetics

Dried ferrous sulfate is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; the main site of absorption is duodenum and jejunum. Absorption is aided by the acid secretion of stomach or dietary acids. The rate of absorption is increased in conditions of iron deficiency. Food and achlorhydria will decrease rat...

Contraindication

Precaution

Ferrous Sulfate tablets should not be given to patients receiving repeated blood transfusion or to patients with anaemia not produced by iron deficiency unless iron deficiency is also present. Ferrous sulfate tablets should be given with cautions in patients with iron storage or iron absorption dise...

Ferrous sulfate should be taken with food if GI upset occurs but do not take with milk or antacids.

Adverse Effects

The astringent action of dried ferrous sulfate may cause gastrointestinal irritation and abdominal pain with nausea and vomiting, diarrhoea or constipation.

Drug Interaction

Concurrent administration of vitamin C with elemental iron increases absorption of oral iron.

Absorption of oral preparation of iron and tetracycline are decreased when both of these drugs are given together. Absorption of fluoroquinolones, levodopa, methyldopa and penicillamine may be decreased due to formation of a ferric ion-quinolone complex.

The response of iron may be delayed in patients receiving concomitant chloramphenicol therapy.

Concurrent administration of antacids or proton pump inhibitors may decrease iron absorption.

Storage

Store at temperature below 30°C in dry place. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach and sight of children.
